Since the completion in late 2019 of its Preparatory Phase, funded by Horizon 2020, DANUBIUS-RI (International Centre for Advanced Studies on River-Sea Systems) could be said to have been through its “wilderness years”. These are now over with the start at the beginning of October of its Implementation Phase Project (DANUBIUS-IP) funded by a Horizon Europe grant under HORIZON-INFRA-2021-DEV-02-02.

DANUBIUS-IP has 25 participating organisations from 12 countries. As with the earlier Preparatory Phase, it is led by GeoEcoMar (National Institute for Research and Development of Marine Geology and Geoecology) in Romania with Professor Adrian Stănică as Coordinator.

The kick-off meeting for DANUBIUS-IP is being held at the International Environmental Educational, Advisory and Information Centre of Water Protection (MEVPIS) at Vodňany in the Czech Republic on 18 October as a Satellite Event of ICRI 2022 (International Conference on Research Infrastructures.

DANUBIUS-RI will offer a source-to-sea perspective to resolve problems arising from human impacts on River-Sea-Systems, filling the gap of fragmented European research and drawing on existing research excellence. It will provide access to a range of European River-Sea Systems, facilities and expertise; a ‘one-stop shop’ for knowledge exchange; access to harmonized data; and a platform for interdisciplinary research, inspiration, education and training. The Step 2 application for ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) status will be submitted early in 2023.
