FIP Consultation workshops 2023 for the FAIRness Assessment 2022

For the preparation of the ENVRI FAIR Implementation Profiles (FIPs) 2022 we will have three online consultation workshops.
They are called the FIPs 2022, as they will represent the status reached in 2022.

  • FIP consultation workshop I Monday 23rd January 2023, 14:00-16:00 CET
  • FIP consultation workshop II Wednesday 22nd February 2023, 09:00-11:00 CET
  • FIP consultation workshop III Monday 13th March 2023, 14:00-16:00 CET

Content: The FIP consultation workshops provide consulting around the issues encountered by the data stewards, providing guidance around the many considerations influencing implementation choices.
Speakers: Barbara Magagna, Eric Schultes
Note: At the FIP consultation workshops there won’t be any introduction to the tool or the method in the workshops, and thus watching the recording of the FIP Introduction is strongly recommended for first-time participants and everyone who needs to refresh their memory, see FIP Introduction.

Background

Following the FAIR principles, we can describe the main characteristics of the digital objects and how those should behave/be attributed to be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable by computer-driven processes. But the principles do not give any detailed recommendations on how to achieve FAIRness in practice – what technologies to apply, which metadata standards to follow, etc. Instead, it is expected that every research community of practice should make their own choices. This has led to a huge variety of technical solutions for what are actually common problems.

To bring some order and convergence, and at the same time allow comparisons between and within domains, the concept of FAIR Implementation Profiles (FIPs) was introduced. These profiles are visualized in the FAIR Convergence Matrix, a collaborative online resource containing machine-readable descriptions of all FAIR implementation choices made by a wide range of research communities. This is the approach already taken by ENVIR-FAIR in the first three rounds of assessing the status of FAIR implementation in the involved RIs. Since then, the FIP tool – called the FIP Wizard – has been considerably improved and these workshops will help to make use of it in the fourth run.

FIPs from participating RIs
The final assessment of the FAIRness of the RIs participating in ENVRI-FAIR will be conducted in the first quarter of 2023 using FIPs. We expect each participating RI to prepare their FIP 2022 by 27 March 2023. You can either prepare the FIP yourself as explained in the Workshops in 2022 or you can participate in one of the Workshops 2023.

Introduction to the FAIR Implementation Profiles

An introduction to the FAIR Implementation Profile (FIP) concept is given in the video here

This is also recommended as a preparation for the FIP workshops 2023, especially for first-time participants.
