ENVRI-FAIR at the 2nd FAIR Convergence Symposium

October 26, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Free

“Catalyzing Convergence in ENVRI-FAIR using FIPs”: dive into the realities of the FAIR Implementation Profiles applied to the ENVRI-FAIR project during this free-to-attend, 2-hour session on 26th October 2022 from 9:00-11:00 CEST. This session is part of the 2nd FAIR Convergence Symposium organised by CODATA in Leiden from 24th to 26th October 2022.

In 2019, as part of its FAIR assessment activity, ENVRI-FAIR collaborated with GO FAIR to develop the FAIR Implementation Profile (FIP) approach to technology landscaping and FAIRness level improvement of data and services.

In a common development effort, the FIP was conceptualized as an ontology, operationalized by adapting the DS Wizard tool (FIP Wizard) and nanopublications, and openly exposed as FAIR, machine-actionable datasets.

The FIP is a collection of FAIR implementation choices made by a community of practice for each of the FAIR Principles. Community-specific FIPs are themselves captured as FAIR assertions that other communities are encouraged to reuse as they see fit, accelerating FAIR uptake and interoperability. Although used annually since 2019 for ENVRI FAIR assessments, the FIP has also been used by a diverse range of other communities.

This session will explore the limitations and opportunities of the FIP approach, focusing on its importance in the promotion of FAIR awareness and as a decision support service for the community. We will describe how these FAIR assessment exercises have impacted the ENVRI implementation plans and how this can lead to practical FAIR convergence. Lastly, the potential role of the FIP in FAIR Digital Objects (FDOs) will be explored, first as metadata for the FDO, and then as a catalyst for driving convergence on the use of FDOs by existing infrastructures.

Session programme and details

This session will be led by Erik Schultes and Barbara Magagna (GO FAIR Foundation, Leiden) with workshop highlights from Katrin Seemeyer (Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany) and Tobias Kuhn (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam).

Panelists include:

The session is organized into 2 parts:

1/ Introduction (40 min)
A review of methods employed in FAIR assessments and of the use of FIP results in catalyzing FAIR convergence in ENVRI-FAIR

FAIR overview, by Erik Schultes (5 min)
ENVRI-FAIR project overview, by Katrin Seemeyer (10 min)
FAIR Implementation Profiles, by Barbara Magagna (10 min)
Approach of RI Convergence in ENVRI-FAIR, by Peter Thijsse (10 min)

2/ Panel Discussion (50 min)
Representatives from different stakeholders discussing different viewpoints on FIPs and convergence (project-perspective, RI-perspective, technology-implementation perspective, end-user-perspective).
