Report from the 1st ENVRI-FAIR policy workshop for the ENVRI community Research Infrastructures

The “1st ENVRI-FAIR policy workshop for the ENVRI community Research Infrastructures” took place remotely, through the Zoom platform, on September 24, 2021. It was organised by WP6 “Training and capacity building” in conjunction with WP4 “Common FAIR Policies”.

The workshop focused on presenting and discussing general concepts on writing and developing policies in environmental Research Infrastructures, their aspects and their relationship to the Research Infrastructure operations.

In particular, the workshop had two main goals:

  1. Discuss “backbone” issues of policies in Research Infrastructures: Differences between policies, best practices, and technological solutions, what kind of processes are involved in each in a distributed RI. Also, the workshop aimed to make these terms commonly agreed upon by the RI participants.
  2. Get engagement with the policy-involved people in all ENVRI RIs to discuss further the key aspects of the ENVRI Policy framework (e.g., access policies, service policies, PID policies).

The workshop was attended by about 40 participants, ENVRI’s RI staff at a different career level, responsible for or interested in the data policy.

Before and during the workshop, questions for discussion on participants’ experiences regarding policies have been collected through the Padlet tool. Furthermore, for the open discussion, the Menti tool has been used.

Ten responses have been collected through an evaluation form shared with the participants at the end of the event. The feedback was very positive: the overall satisfaction regarding the event and the presentations have been rated “very good”, as for the quality of discussion and dialogue, with a high relevance of the workshop topic on the participants’ current work. The participants mostly appreciated the overall given picture of the Policy environment, together with the framework for developing a data policy for the RI.

Results of the workshop will be used to develop further the ENVRI policy recommendations, use as a basis for training materials on the subject, and as the backbone of more detailed workshops on specific RI policies.

The slides are made available afterwards by email and via the ENVRI training platform.
