Towards Environmental Research Infrastructure as a Service for the Open Science Cloud
September 30, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
“Towards Environmental Research Infrastructure as a Service for the Open Science Cloud” is a session organised within the Digital Infrastructures for research conference.
The session will be organized on Friday, September 30, 2016 – 09:00, Krakow, Poland
Presenters: Yin Chen (EGI.eu), Dr. Zhiming Zhao (University of Amsterdam)
The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) will enable digital science by introducing IT as a Service to the public research sector in Europe. In this session, we will invite environmental science research infrastructure (RI) communities to discuss how to build an “Environmental RI-as-a-Service” that can contribute to the EOSC, along with what we have and what is needed. Through invited talks and panel discussions, we aim to:
- Develop an understanding of the common computational challenges encountered by environmental science communities
- Share best practices in managing and processing big scientific data using e-infrastructure technology
- Identify the expected features and functionalities of Environmental RI-as-a-Service.
Structure - Three invited talks from representative European environmental RIs on scientific use cases and service solutions (20 mins * 3)
- One mini-panel discussion on “Environmental RI-as-a-Service: a viewpoint from common challenges and interoperable solutions” (30 mins)
Talk 1 | EISCAT-3D: a Data Centric Design for the Extreme Scale Computing |
Talk 2 | Collection and Analysis of Ocean Big Data: Building the EMSODEV Data Management Platform using EGI Federated Cloud |
Talk 3 | ENES: Climate Model Intercomparison Data Analysis |
Talk 4 | The Role of the ENVRI Reference Model in the Development of European Research Infrastructures |
Mini Panel | Environmental RI-as-a-Service: a viewpoint on common challenges and interoperable solutions |
Target Audience:
- E-infrastructure technology providers who want to understand community requirements
- Environmental research communities who want to know existing practices for utilising e-infrastructure.
Benefits for Audience:
- Establishment of a technology discussion forum for environmental scientists and technology providers.
- Promotion of new collaborations between user communities and e-infrastructure service providers.
- Formulation of a conceptual paradigm for Environmental RI-as-a-Service for Open Science Cloud.
